By this point, you may be saying to yourself, "I still don't really know what makes me...well...me!" YOU'RE ABOUT TO FIND OUT! This short video explains a good amount about what makes you....you. You will probably finish this video and have a great deal of questions. That's okay! In fact, your assignment for today is to start writing these questions in the "Output" part of your notebook. Don't forget to create a post about these questions if you have them. You never know what the student sitting next to you might be able to teach you!
Next, you may still be asking yourself, what is the difference between DNA, Chromosomes, and Genes? I keep hearing these terms, but I'm not sure what the difference is! We're glad you asked. I have a short video for you that will clear that up in a jiffy.
Last, but certainly not least, we need to talk over the structure of DNA. Believe it or not, there are only a few parts of the molecule you need to develop an understanding of to allow you to create your own model of a segment of DNA. Watch here for details about DNA.
And finally! You are going to be creating your own segment of DNA (you might even call it a gene, although it will be entirely made up). Your mission, if you choose to accept it (and you will, because it's a graded assignment) is to create a segment of DNA out of anything you want. We don't care if it's parts from your parent's car or marshmallows and twizzlers...get creative!
Here are the requirements:
DNA structure must be a minimum of 10 nucleotide strands long.
DNA must of the proper combination of Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine and Thymine.
DNA must also have the phosphate Deoxyribose strands labeled correctly (sides of the molecule)
All parts must be labeled.
This must be completed by the beginning of Day 5
Remember: The more creative you get, the better! Have fun with this one, but show us you understand the general structure of Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid!
Write questions in "output" section of notebook and post 1 question, and respond to one other person's question in the "comments" portion (top right) - Due by end of Day 3
Build structure of DNA out of any materials - Due by Day 5
Day 3
